Featuring Filo Machado direct from Brazil, Sambacana and Baque de Bamba (comprised of many members of the former group Maracatu Nunca Antes.)
On stages and recordings throughout the world, some of the most important names in international music have collaborated with and contributed to the soundtrack of this distinguished singer, songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer from São Paulo. Names like Michel Legrand, Kenny Barron, Joyce, Paul Mauriat, Gal Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, Jon Hendricks, Jane Duboc, Rosa Passos, Ivan Lins, Leny Andrade, Romero Lubambo Tito Madi, Flora Purim, Raul de Souza, Dori Caymmi, Toots Thielemans , Johnny Alf, Tim Maia, Steve Turre, among others.
From Ribeirão Preto, Brazil to the world, Filo´s virtuosity and distinctive style has taken him him to The USA, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Japan. He has played in Canada “Rendez Vous Brasil/Cuba”, with the saxophonist Jane Bunnet. As a composer he has partnered with some of the greatest names in Brazilian music including Djavan, Aldir Blanc, Sérgio Natureza, Taiguara, Judith de Souza, Sérgio Ricardo and Fátima Guedes. Ha has participated in several Jazz festivals such as Corsega e Uzeste, in France and was the opening act to Nina Simone´s concert at Cannes Jazz Festival. His album “Cantando um Samba”, released by Malandro Records (Ohio – USA), received high critics’ praise in jazz, and world music, in Down Beat, Jazziz, Jazz Now and Rhythm, and was nominated for a Grammy award for best Latin jazz album.
“Cantando um Samba” took Filo Machado to the world stage with the conductor Ettore Stratta and producer Pat Philips’ invitation, whom he shared the Carnegie Hall stage with in New York, together with Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Toots Thielemans, César Camargo Mariano, Jane Monheit, Romero Lubambo and Paula Robison, for the concert “40 anos de Bossa Nova”.
In 2001, the record company Lua Discos released the album “Porto Seguro” to even more critical acclaim. It is jam-packed with Brazilian gems. Maracangalha by Dorival Caymmi and Maria Três Filhos, by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant, and many original works make for a spectacular combination. Featured guests on the album include Arismar do Espírito Santo, Léa Freire, Naylor Proveta, Robertinho Silva and Laércio de Freitas. Special mention was given to the songs Novo Testamento, made with poet Nei Lopes or Quatro Elementos, with Aldir Blanc.
After distribution of Filo’s next CD, Jazz de Senzala, produced by the record company Maritaca, with Toninho Horta, Arismar do Espírito Santo, Léa Freire, Vinícius Dorin, Teco Cardoso Harwey Waynapel and Thiago do Espírito Santo, and arrangements by Théo de Barros, the artist released the album Tom Brasileiro (through Lua Music), with the singer Cibele Codonho, in honor of Tom Jobim, and the album Brazil Connection with the renowned Japanese bass player Tetsuo Sakurai. Filo and Tetsuo went on tour through Japan and Indonesia in 2006.
In 2007, Filo directed and arranged the concert “Era Iluminada” with important Brazilian artists from elder and new generations, Roberto Menescal, João Donato, Joyce, Miucha, Claudete Soares, Adr
iana Godoy, Giana Viscardi, Dj Patife and Dj Madzoo. Subsequently Filo went to the Ecuador jazz festival, and upon returning participated with great success as a special guest on João Donato´s concert at Auditório do Ibirapuera, and also as a special guest on Sergio Ricardo´s concert on Theatro Municipal in a project called Virada Cultural, in São Paulo.
Later that same year, Filo returned to Guayaquil, Ecuador to perform for the opening of the concert house Casaluna. In December 2007, he once again produced and directed the concert “Era Iluminada” but this time with the participation of Rosa Passos, Roberto Menescal, João Donato, Adriana Godoy, Giana Viscardy, Miucha, Claudette Soares and Luiz Carlos Miéle. In January 2008, Sergio Ricardo and Adriana Lutf invited Filo to be a guest at their gala concert.
Always the prolific composer, full of new ideas, with over 11 albums to his credit today Filo is preparing the release of not one, but two of his latest works “Tratado de Amor” and “Ubida”. Tratado… being his first acoustic guitar and voice album. Ubida, recorded in New York, includes the illustrious roster of musical greats including Kenny Barron, César Camargo Mariano, Romero Lubambo, Paulo Braga, Nilson Matta, Teco Cardoso, Daniel Santiago, Gabriel Grossi, Daniel D’Alcântara and Steve Turre.
